RG's "Fairway Focus" is a weekly look at golf's major tours. PGA Professional Brendon Elliott, a three-decade industry veteran, provides his insights. This week, Elliott previews this week's PGA TOUR stop, The American Express, and week two of TGL.
PGA TOUR Preview: The American Express
From its inception in 1960, then known as The Palm Springs Desert Golf Classic, The American Express kicks off today and is the next stop on the PGA TOUR's Opening Drive. When Arnold Palmer won that inaugural event in 1960, the host venue was Thunderbird Country Club, and the winning check was a mere $12,000. Fast forward to today, some 65 years later, and PGA WEST hosts in a three-course rotation, which includes the Pete Dye Stadium Course, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and the La Quinta Country Club. Oh, and the winners check-in 2025, a whopping $1,584,000.
In contrast to most events on the TOUR, the field will be narrowed down to the top 65 players and ties after three rounds. Those who qualify will play the final round at the renowned Stadium Course. The American Express, known for low scores, often draws the attention of golf fans due to the birdie fest that typically unfolds. Last year's historic win by then amateur Nick Dunlap saw him shoot 29-under par 259.
This week, players have the chance to improve their standing in the Aon Swing 5, which may help them qualify for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational, the PGA TOUR's next two Signature Events of the 2025 season. The top five FedExCup points earners from the Sony Open in Hawaii, The American Express, and the Farmers Insurance Open will earn spots in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am via the Aon Swing 5.
Historic Win in 2024: Nick Dunlap Defends in 2025
Nick Dunlap made headlines last year when he achieved a historic victory at The American Express as an amateur, shooting a tournament-record 29-under-par. Now, as a regular PGA TOUR member, Dunlap is ready to defend his title. His remarkable journey in 2024, transitioning from a sophomore at the University of Alabama who won on the PGA TOUR as an amateur to a newly minted PGA TOUR member finding victory again at the Barracuda Championship later in the year, was the stuff of legend for a rookie. That second win illustrated his exceptional talent and confirmed that his win at The American Express was no fluke. As Dunlap returns to the site of his groundbreaking triumph this week, all eyes will be on him to see if he can replicate his extraordinary accomplishment.
Favorites: Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, Sungjae Im, Justin Thomas, and Nick Taylor
As the tournament begins, several prominent names have emerged as favorites this week at The American Express. Wyndham Clark, eager to secure his first title in La Quinta, is among the frontrunners. Patrick Cantlay, currently ranked 11th in the world, is always a formidable competitor. Two-time winner Sungjae Im is another player to watch, coming off a strong third-place finish at The Sentry two weeks ago. Crowd favorite Justin Thomas, who has shown solid form recently, will also be one to keep an eye on this week. Additionally, last week's winner, the pride of Canada, Nick Taylor, appears poised for another strong performance.
Sponsors Invites: 17-Year-Old Blades Brown and YouTuber Wesley Bryan
The excitement of this year's tournament is heightened by the special extended sponsor invites, which include the highly talked-about 17-year-old talent Blades Brown, who is making his professional debut. Brown's entry brings a fresh and youthful energy to the competition, generating significant interest among fans and fellow players.
Additionally, Wesley Bryan, the popular YouTuber and beloved PGA TOUR personality, has also secured a spot in the tournament. Known for his engaging personality and creativity both on and off the golf course, Bryan's participation is expected to draw considerable attention, especially from the younger generation of golf enthusiasts.
TGL Week Two Roundup: Woods Debut Disappointing as Jupiter Links Spanked By LA Golf Club
Tiger Woods made his highly anticipated debut in the TGL League this past Tuesday, electrifying fans and adding a substantial dose of star power to the fledgling competition. However, the excitement surrounding Tiger's presence quickly turned to disappointment for his team, Jupiter Links, as they found themselves on the receiving end of a dominant display by the Los Angeles Golf Club.
At The SoFi Center, Woods' team faced a strong challenge from the LA Golf Club. The Californian squad, featuring PGA TOUR stars Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, and Sahith Theegala, demonstrated impressive teamwork and skill as they effectively overpowered the Jupiter Links team, which included Tiger Woods, Kevin Kisner, and Max Homa. Los Angeles won decisively with a score of 12 to 1, marking the second consecutive week of a one-sided victory. While I still support this emerging league and concept, the first two weeks have left much to be desired in terms of competitiveness.
Woods continues to capture global attention despite years of inconsistent performance due to injuries. His signature resilience and charisma rallied fans, even though his efforts weren't enough to lead Jupiter Links to victory this time. His involvement in TGL marks a new chapter in his illustrious career and provides younger players with a unique opportunity to compete alongside one of the greatest golfers in history.
Ultimately, it was Los Angeles' day to shine. Their strong teamwork and strategic execution disrupted Jupiter Links' rhythm early on, leaving little room for a comeback. This victory placed the LA Golf Club at the top of the standings, showcasing their potential as serious contenders for the championship.
