YouTube Golf: Transforming the Game, One Click and View at a Time, And Mainstream Golf Has Now Officially Taken Notice

Golf has always been a sport cloaked in tradition, teeming with an aura of exclusivity and stiff decorum. But today, something remarkable is happening: YouTube Golf is giving the sport an enthusiastic facelift, making it more appealing and accessible to people like you and me. This exciting transformation is crystallized by the PGA TOUR’s recent investment in the Creator Classic, an event scheduled to run during the week of the TOUR Championship, bringing together the best of golf’s digital creators. This isn't just the merging of two worlds; it’s the recognition of what has been happening in the YouTube space for some time now by the standard bearers in the professional game. This is a big deal.

Like many, my perception of golf was once limited to the elite circles it was often depicted in, and that is coming from me, an insider, PGA Professional, and a guy who has been working in the golf space for nearly three decades. 

However, the rise of YouTube Golf has shattered these outdated notions, democratizing the sport in extraordinary, heartfelt ways. Channels led by personalities like Rick Shiels, Peter Finch, and the dynamic crew at Good Good Golf have revolutionized how we connect with this game. Their content isn't just engaging; it's relatable and, more importantly, inviting.

Take Rick Shiels, for example. With over 2 million subscribers, Rick has fostered an extraordinary community by offering comprehensive tutorials, honest equipment reviews, and delightfully entertaining challenges. His down-to-earth style makes golf feel accessible, encouraging new players to pick up clubs and seasoned golfers to refine their game—all while having a good laugh. In a similar vein, other creators have made golf feel less like an exclusive club and more like a warm, welcoming community.

2024 U.S. Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau, said repeatedly after his victory how much the creator space has transformed him.

“I’m just learning to be myself and continue to be ok with what happens. From my perspective, whats been really nice and helpful for me is doing a lot of content on YouTube. As crazy as it sounds, it’s been really awesome to see how I can affect a lot of people's lives. Junior golfers lives, even middle-aged men, are coming and shouting, ‘Thank you for all the content; appreciate what you do online.’ It’s pretty cool to see that transformation and change. I dunno, I have a new perspective on life with that.”

Earlier this year, I had a chance to talk to George and Wesley Bryan of Bryan Bros fame on YouTube. When I asked George what he liked best about creating content on YouTube, he said the following:

“My favorite part is it allows us to have lots of fun playing golf together, but more importantly, we have something where we can make an impact on the game for the good, for the positive, and show people how fun it is. It is very, very humbling, and I am very appreciative of that.”

George and Wesley will both be competing in the PGA TOUR’s Creators Classic.

The PGA TOUR’s introduction of the Creator Classic isn't just a recognition of this digital wave; it's a bold, innovative embrace. Hosting this event during the TOUR Championship illustrates their commitment to evolving the sport by celebrating these content creators.
