What’s driving the uptick?

  • Spring playoff action: NBA and NHL postseason games helped keep betting volume elevated even after the March Madness surge.
  • Broader menu: April’s golf majors and early MLB season offered more wagering options, spreading risk across multiple sports.
  • Same-game parlays: DraftKings continues to promote parlays and in-play bets, products that typically boost hold.
Year-to-date, Oregon’s handle is tracking roughly 6% ahead of the first four months of 2024, while GGR is about 22% higher, reinforcing the market’s gradual growth trajectory.

Looking ahead

With NFL preseason futures and Summer Games odds now available, May and June results will show whether the stronger hold persists or normalizes.

Oregon’s DraftKings-Only Sportsbook Model

Oregon runs one of America’s strictest single-operator systems. The Oregon Lottery awarded an exclusive contract to DraftKings, which replaced the Scoreboard app on 18 January 2022 and remains the state’s only legal mobile and online sportsbook. Anyone 21+ physically inside state lines can wager through the DraftKings platform, although certain props and college markets are restricted under Lottery policy. Retail alternatives exist only at tribal casinos such as Chinook Winds and Spirit Mountain; no additional online licences are available.

DraftKings offers live betting, same-game parlays, and a broad domestic and international sports menu. Still, promotional variety and pricing are ultimately governed by the Lottery rather than an open market.

Oregon’s current structure limits growth. Opening the market to multiple licensed operators could increase competition, improve user experience, and significantly raise the state's long-term revenue potential.
