In an exclusive interview with RG, Carolina Hurricanes star Andrei Svechnikov candidly discusses the unexpected departure of teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov, his grueling injury recovery, and the team's playoff disappointment. The Russian forward also shares insights on his public persona and the Hurricanes' leadership changes.

Kuznetsov's Abrupt Farewell Shocks Teammates

"I haven't had the opportunity to speak with Kuznetsov, but I was extremely surprised to hear he was leaving. I wish he could have played for us longer, as we had only played together for a short time, and that wasn't enough for me. Nevertheless, he knows best what's right for him, and I wish him all the best.”

The hockey world was stunned when Evgeny Kuznetsov terminated his NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on July 18th, with reports suggesting he's returning to Russia. Svechnikov, who had limited time to bond with his compatriot on the ice, expressed his bewilderment at the decision.

Svechnikov reveals he hasn't spoken directly with Kuznetsov about the departure, hinting at the sudden nature of the move that left even teammates in the dark.

The Long Road to Recovery: Svechnikov's 8-Month Battle

Svechnikov's 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons were marred by injuries, culminating in a season-ending knee injury on March 11, 2023. The young star opened up about the mental and physical toll of his recovery:

"Recovering from an injury was difficult, but it took even longer due to the recovery process. There were many thoughts during this time, and each day I woke up, went to the gym, and worked on my leg. It lasted 8 months and was difficult and painful."

Svechnikov's resilience through 8 months of rehabilitation showcases the often-unseen struggles of professional athletes.

Playoff Heartbreak and Personal Growth

Despite personal success in the postseason (11 points in 11 games), Svechnikov candidly addressed the team's playoff exit against the New York Rangers:

"The season was good, but we faced some setbacks in the playoffs. We played against a strong opponent, the Rangers, which was challenging. The series was tight, but ultimately, they were stronger.”

The forward also reflected on his performance, acknowledging the need for continued improvement:

"According to statistics, things have been pretty much the same for me. I knew that although I was at a similar level, I needed to take the next step and set even bigger goals for myself."

Life Off the Ice: Svechnikov's Public Persona

In a rare glimpse into his life away from the rink, Svechnikov discussed his ability to maintain a relatively normal lifestyle despite his rising star status:

"In my current role, I can safely go shopping, to the cinema and restaurants. However, to truly assess my popularity, it's better to consult the Hurricanes' fans."

Svechnikov suggests that fan interaction might be the true measure of a player's popularity, offering a unique perspective on athlete-fan relationships.

Hurricanes' Leadership: Confidence in Brind'Amour and Tulsky

Svechnikov expressed strong support for head coach Rod Brind'Amour:

"I was confident that he would continue to be with the team, and I was delighted when the news was announced. Brind'Amour is a great leader, and we make it to the playoffs every year, although we were unfortunately eliminated this season. He is an excellent coach who helps everyone and ensures we arrive at the locker room positively".

The forward also shared his thoughts on new general manager Eric Tulsky:

"He has been with the team for many years, and I know him well. When I joined the organization, he had already been there for a long time. We didn't spend a lot of time together, but I have certainly heard about his achievements. I have only heard positive things about Eric and consider him a true hockey genius."

Svechnikov's endorsement of the Hurricanes' leadership provides insight into the team's strong organizational culture.
