RG's "Fairway Focus" is a weekly look at golf's major tours. PGA Professional Brendon Elliott, a three-decade industry veteran, provides his insights. This week, Elliott previews this week's PGA TOUR stop, The Genesis Invitational, including players to watch and potential storylines.
Event Host Venue Moved to Torrey Pines Due to LA Area Fires
This year's Genesis Invitational has shifted from its traditional host site at Riviera to the renowned Torrey Pines. This change is due to the ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
Just three short weeks ago, the PGA TOUR was at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open. That week, strong winds wreaked havoc on the field, seeing Harris English emerge victorious with a four-day total of 280, 8-under par.
With its majestic cliffs and stunning ocean views, Torrey Pines presents a worthy alternative to Riviera and is ready to challenge the world's top golfers once again. However, despite its beauty, there may be weather challenges ahead. The practice rounds on Wednesday were wet, and according to PGA TOUR meteorologist Kyle Koval, Thursday and Friday are expected to continue with that trend:
Despite the sadness surrounding the need for the host course change, the excitement to return to this storied venue is high. Fans and players are eager to see how Torrey will play this week and whether it will show the same teeth as it did during the Farmers Insurance Open three weeks ago.
Defending Champ, Hideki Matsuyama in Good Form
As we gear up for the event, one name that has rightfully emerged as a player to watch is Hideki Matsuyama, last year’s champion. His meticulous preparation and recent strong form make him a formidable contender this week. Matsuyama is always a name to watch, but when he is on his game, has a win already under his belt this year, and is returning to defend his title, he has quite a bit in his favor.
Scottie and Rory in the Field and Looking Good
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are undoubtedly the two most prominent names in golf right now. Rory arrived at the Genesis this week with momentum, having won at Pebble Beach two weeks ago. Scottie comes to Torrey Pines with determination, aiming to secure his first victory of the year after suffering a holiday hand injury that limited his return to competition until two weeks ago at Pebble. It wouldn't be surprising if one of these two exceptional talents emerged as the winner come Sunday; in fact, many are banking on that happening.
Contenders: Detry, English, Spieth
Attention must also be given to Thomas Detry, Harris English, and Jordan Spieth, each ready to make waves at Torrey Pines. Detry's dominance last week at the WM Phoenix Open continues to turn heads, and he enters this week with a surge in confidence.
Harris English, who won the Farmers three weeks ago at Torrey, is another figure to watch. His methodical approach could be an asset in managing the course's challenges.
With his flair and creativity, Jordan Spieth certainly has the capability to surprise the field this week, especially after his showing last week at the WM, where he rebounded mightily from his months-long return two weeks ago at Pebble.
Sponsor Invites: Fowler, Woodland, Danny List
The Genesis Invitational welcomes some notable sponsor invites this week, including fan favorites Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland. Fowler, known for his charismatic on-course presence, is looking to bounce back from having to withdraw last week at the WM due to illness. Woodland, known for his power, will aim to take advantage of the layout. It's been some time since Woodland's last victory, which came at the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach; could those good California vibes from that monumental week for Gary find their way back this week? We will have to see what the week brings.
One other sponsor's invite of note is Danny List, the 2025 Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption recipient. This honor has been awarded annually since 2009 to advance diversity in golf. The 26-year-old, who now lives in San Diego, grew up playing on greens that were, as he told the press, “probably a 2 on the Stimpmeter” in Accra, Ghana. When Danny was 13, he received a scholarship to attend a boarding school in England, and that was where he started to gain prominence as a top junior player. He was recruited to play at the University of Washington, where he spent one year. At that point, the desire was to give professional golf a shot.
As Danny was gaining momentum as a professional, playing on various professional tours, he suffered a significant setback in 2023 when he sustained a stress fracture to his lower back. That put him out of action for an entire year. However, Danny was not about to give up on his dream, and he would come roaring back in 2024, setting a tournament scoring record of 21-under par while winning the California State Open. Last November, he earned his 2025 DP World Tour card, finishing as one of the top 21 players at its Q-School finals.
Genesis Invitational host Tiger Woods shared his thoughts with the press on why Danny was this year's worthy recipient of the Sifford Memorial Exemption:
“Danny has shown resiliency and determination on the course by earning his DP World Tour card after returning from an injury. He’s earned this opportunity, and I look forward to seeing Danny tee it up at Torrey.”
Tiger Woods Withdraws From Play
Unfortunately yet understandable, Genesis Invitational host Tiger Woods decided to withdraw from this week's event. Tiger was scheduled to make his much-anticipated return this week at Torrey, but on Monday, in a statement, announced his withdrawal.
"I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready. I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss."
Woods went on to say: "Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week, and I appreciate the continued kindness since my mom’s passing."
