Former Fenerbahce midfielder Stephen Appiah believes that Jose Mourinho's arrival at the club will significantly enhance the Turkish Super League.

Mourinho's Impact on Turkish Football

Stephen Appiah, who played for Fenerbahce and has had an illustrious career in Europe, expressed his excitement about Mourinho's move to Turkey. He emphasized that Mourinho's character and coaching prowess would resonate well with the passionate Fenerbahce fans and the broader Turkish football culture.

"I’m so excited because when it comes to Fenerbahce the fans are crazy. The character of Mourinho is going to fit so well with the club. His fame and coaching skills are going to give something huge to the Turkish Super League in general."

Mourinho's Success with African Players

Mourinho has a notable history of developing African players, having worked with stars like Benni McCarthy, Didier Drogba, and Michael Essien. Appiah hopes that Mourinho will continue this trend at Fenerbahce, particularly with Ghanaian defender Alexander Djiku, who has been impressive since joining from France.

"As you rightly said, Jose Mourinho has been very good with African players and I think everyone he’s worked with proves themselves including Didier Drogba, Solomon Kalou, Michael Essien, Mikel Obi and a lot of them."

"We have Djiku who has been able to win the hearts of the fans with the way he carries himself around and the way he approaches the game and I hope that with the arrival of Mourinho, he will be able to take his game to the next level."

Mourinho's Potential to Strengthen Fenerbahce

Appiah believes that Mourinho will look to bring in additional African talent, which could further bolster Fenerbahce's squad. The midfielder is confident that Mourinho's presence will inspire players to give their best, ultimately benefiting the club.

"What I know from him is that he would have been looking around already for some African players and let's see if he does that. I know they love him in this part of the world and they will die for him to be successful."

The Challenge Ahead

Despite some opinions in mainland Europe suggesting that Mourinho is stepping down from top-tier leagues, Appiah points out Mourinho's consistent success across multiple countries. He stresses that Mourinho will face the challenge of returning Fenerbahce to the top of the Turkish league, competing against strong rivals like Galatasaray.

"I mean it will be tough because Galatasaray have a very good team and a very good manager too but Fener is the biggest team in Turkey and that has to always be the case."

"They lost the league this season but they put up a good fight so surely they’re not that far from it. They have Dzeko and Fred and the rest, so the team is very good with a few strengthening here and there and they will be able to at least compete and be in it for the long run."

Comparing Italian and Turkish Leagues

Appiah, who spent a significant part of his career in Italy, acknowledges that while the Italian league is ahead of the Turkish league in some respects, the passion and competitiveness in Turkey are unparalleled.

"If I’m being honest, the Italian league is a bit ahead of the Turkish league but the Turkish league is full of passion and one of the best also in Europe for so many reasons."

The Passion of Turkish Football

Appiah concludes by highlighting the high quality and competitiveness of Turkish football, mentioning that the league often sees teams in the Champions League and attracts significant talent.

"Every year you’re likely to see at least two Turkish teams in the Champions League so it's a massive league and for the brand of Mourinho, you will see a lot of people go there to try and be better."

Stephen Appiah's reflections underscore the exciting potential Mourinho's arrival brings to Fenerbahce and the Turkish Super League. As the football world watches, there is eager anticipation for the impact Mourinho will have on Turkish football.
